What does that expression mean?

An idea has been percolating in my head for a couple of years about doing research on the origin of expressions that we use... maybe not in daily life, but pretty close. So, the point of this blog is to get the ball rolling.

Oh, "Get the ball rolling"... Isn't that an expression? What ball? How big is the ball? Does it mean what I literally said? If that expression were word-for-word translated into another language, how would it come out? Would it mean the same thing?

Hats off to ya.  Yay, another expression!  I'm expecting and hoping that this will turn into a fun and adventurous exploration. Since this is my first venture into blogging, I'm more nervous than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

"Tighter than a flea's ass jumping over a rain barrel." What in the world does that mean? What is the context?

"Raining harder than a cow pissing on a flat rock."  That's just gross!

"Hotter than a snake's butt in a wagon rut."

Some are obvious, but a lot of expressions are obscure and downright insidious.

My grandmother used to say, when she was surprised, "I'll be Swanee."  Anyone know where that comes from?

Please feel free to let me know your ideas, your weird expressions, or anything. You can send it via carrier pigeon or Pony Express. ha - you younger folks aren't gonna know what those mean.  :P
